Description
The project on the "Establishment, Testing and Operation of a Community Managed Micro-Hydro Power Projects in Brgy. Cayabu, Tanay, Rizal Province (CMMHP- Cayabu)" is a collaboration project among DOST-CALABARZON, University of Rizal System, LGU Tanay, and Sanguniang Barangay of Cayabu. This aims to establish and operate a pilot micro-hydro turbine system that will be tested by the Micro Hydro Power (MHP) Turbine Testing Center to make sure of its efficiency and possible impact to the community where it is located.
Barangay Cayabu is one of the communities in upland Tanay which represents 0.59% of the total population of Tanay. It is situated at approximately 14.6214, 121.3709, in the island of Luzon. Elevation at these coordinates is estimated at 446.0 meters or 1,463.2 feet above mean sea level. It is known for its virgin forests and mountains such as Mt. Maynoba where the 8 Wonder Falls is located and the Mt. Cayabu – a protected and cultivated area by an Indigenous Community.
But despite its beauty at day, most part of the barangay is covered with darkness at night time. No electric posts are situated and most parts of the road have no street lights. Only families who can afford to buy solar panels can enjoy life at night and most suffer in darkness.
Through the project, the whole barangay community will also be able to learn that aside from the solar heat, water can also be a source of electric power through the micro-hydro power turbine that will be situated in the area. They will also be trained on how to operate and utilize it accordingly and productively through the team effort exerted by the different government agencies.
