Description
The Enhanced Nutribun is a ready-to-eat bread developed by the DOST-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) that is made from squash which is rich in vitamin A, a nutrient that is commonly lacking in the regular meal of Filipino children. It also has more micronutrients like iron and vitamin A. The texture is softer and weighs 160-165 grams per piece, which makes it easier for children to hold and bite. Each serving has 504 calories, 17.8 grams protein, 6.08 milligrams iron and 244 micrograms vitamin A. A piece of enhanced nutribun already provides 60% of requirements for vitamin A.
In CALABARZON Region, a total of eight firms were assisted by DOST-CALABARZON in the technology adoption of the Enhanced Nutribun. They are the following: Amira’s Buko Tart Haus in Tagaytay, Cavite, Gem See’s Cakeshop in San Pablo, Laguna, Golden Wheat Bakery in San Pablo, Laguna, Malou’s Bakery/MRG Food Products in Imus, Cavite, Momilo Milo in Cainta, Rizal, Panaderia Pantoja, Inc. in Tanauan, Batangas, San Jose Workers’ Multi-Purpose Cooperative in San Jose, Batangas, and Swisspharma Research Laboratories Inc. in Cabuyao, Laguna. This first batch of technology adopters can now supply enhanced nutribun in their locality and partner with the Department of Education and Department of Social Welfare and Development in their regular feeding programs for children and students to combat malnutrition.
