As a pioneer in open and distance e-Learning (ODeL) in the Philippines, the UP Open University (UPOU) continues to explore various information and communication technologies (ICT) in enhancing not just its course development and delivery, but its provision of support and information services as well. One of the tools that is gaining popularity in businesses and even in universities in recent years is artificial intelligence (AI). The integration of AI-based tools such as chatbots in an organization’s systems and processes promise some degree of streamlining given the increasing demand of customers. In 2019, UPOU developed its own chatbot which provides intelligent, appropriate, immediate, and human-like interactions and conversations when prompted. This tool is intended to enhance engagement with existing students, prospective students, and interested individuals in the University by guiding them through existing information found in the UPOU website and microsites.
Users can ask questions in Filipino and English to the UPOU chatbot, then it will attempt to detect the user’s intent and will respond accordingly from a list of reply templates. The UPOU chatbot is available through the UPOU website, and is integrated in the University’s main Facebook page. This video will show how the UPOU chatbot works, and how the interested public can access and use it.
